Minecraft's Mayhem Mounts Drop Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to the Game

The seasonal content update for Minecraft has arrived — and it features the initial fresh armament added to the game since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it could very well alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you thrive on pandemonium.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mayhem Mounts update also incorporates a host of fresh elements and updates centered around animal mounts in the game. That driving concept made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the creators had long felt it was time for a fresh combat tool.

"We knew initially that we aimed for a new weapon that would add some more range, and we designed it specifically for mounted combat," explained a senior product manager. "We experimented with a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both felt great when we tested our prototypes and also looked good for the use case."

If you're curious whether fighting from a saddle means you can tilt at your allies on steeds, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an offensive action perfectly suited for it.

"[Jousting on horses is a major applications for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the lead continues. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the jab attack, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you couch your lance and inflict increased harm [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for jousting on horses."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The unruly pleasure can extend beyond there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are very late, [spears are] ideal for strapping on the wings and flying forth and creating genuine chaos," she suggests.

In other words: Aerial lance combat is now possible, and it should be made an Olympic sport immediately.

Another major addition in this fresh content is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is modeled after the seashells found in-game for years, can be domesticated and ridden for submarine exploration. Not only will it transport you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also maintain your oxygen levels, so there's no need to surface for a breath.

The other inclusions are primarily things that want to kill you, as is the tradition of Minecraft. As expected, there's also a zombie Nautilus spawning in the water, often with a Drowned on its back. If you manage to take care of the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a puffer fish.

"We've long considered this problem periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the right time to also unveil something for the ocean depths," the lead clarifies. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for aquatic rides that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked striking, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also points out that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: standard and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] add variety to what you encounter underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Other additions include the Parched, biome-specific undead archers that can survive in the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you find yourself in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their bones protruding. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.

The final pair of items on the drop's list are refinements, including some much-anticipated tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can ford waterways while atop a horse. Furthermore, high-tier barding is now craftable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the ultimate protection it deserves.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

Overall, the final game drop of the year is a notable addition. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have constituted a significant enhancement. Combine that with the Nautilus, and additional creatures trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.

The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is available for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
