Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Selection But Joe McCarthy Left Out

Rugby team announcement news

Returning manager the Ireland coach has named captain Doris in his Ireland team for the fall Tests, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, with doubts lingering if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in the US on 1 November.

Second row Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out due to injury, and number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery following the Lions tour.

Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new member in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

After facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented Farrell, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a mostly familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first time in Saturday's URC match at Croke Park.

Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen with the coach opting against calling up the province's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international victories over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced group of centre choices. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, though the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at full-back.

Wingers Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the wins over Georgia and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has been in two of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games this season and played in the second string's defeat by England in the English city previously.

McCarthy was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to deputise for Doris should the captain fails to recover full fitness in time to play the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on Monday before flying to Chicago on the following day.
