Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
